These BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Sandwiches are the perfect vegan alternative to traditional pork sandwiches. They’re hearty, satisfying & smoky-sweet!
The recipe for these BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Sandwiches came straight out of Robin Robertson’s new cookbook, Veganize It! and it will be hitting the stands on March 7, 2017. Until then, I’m sharing my honest review of her book, and the recipe for these mouth-watering sammies.
I couldn’t wait to review Robin’s new cookbook, because I have a bunch of her other books, and the recipes never disappoint. Robin knows how to put a vegan meal together that is easy to make, uses simple ingredients and is full of flavor. I Just knew that Veganize It! would be just as fabulous.
I chose the BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Sandwiches to share, because I’m a big jackfruit lover, and I use it in many recipes. When cooked, jackfruit has an uncanny resemblance and texture to shredded pork or chicken.
Also, the unripened jackfruit is virtually tasteless, and it has the ability to absorb lots of flavor from seasonings, just like meat. My Jackfruit Carnitas Tacos are so close to the original pork version, it could fool a carnivore easily.
The first thing I do when I get a new cookbook, is flip through the pages to look at the food porn (doesn’t everybody?). While flipping through the book, I noticed vibrant & colorful, full-page photos.
Everything looked so scrumptious and inviting, and I was ready to get in the kitchen. There aren’t photos for every recipe, but there are enough to keep me drooling. Besides, there are 150 delicious recipes to make up for it.
The next thing I do is scan through the ingredients to determine the ease of the recipes I’ll be making. As expected, Robin kept it simple, with inexpensive and easy-to-find ingredients. You won’t need any fancy kitchen gadgets or expensive appliances either.
Even though the ingredients are simple, each recipe has a variety of flavorful seasonings that’ll keep your taste buds happy. Also, Robin provides a detailed list of essentials you’ll need for your vegan pantry.

I saw so many enticing recipes to make, and it was really hard to choose one, but the BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Sandwiches were really calling my name. They just looked so sticky and savory, and I had to give them a shot.
Besides their mouth-watering appeal, the recipe called for 8 simple ingredients (not including salt & pepper) and looked like a snap to put together. The recipe calls for canned jackfruit, Store-bought or homemade BBQ sauce, onion, olive oil, tamari sauce, smoked paprika, and 4 sandwich rolls. I had everything in my kitchen, so I was ready for action.
This recipe was so simple and quick to put together. I drained and rinsed the jackfruit, sautéed the onion in olive oil, and added the jackfruit with the seasonings. Then I generously poured on BBQ sauce and simmered to perfection.
Next, I piled the deliciousness high on toasty bread and served them to the gremlins in the home. They cooked fast and disappeared even faster. Just like magic!
These BBQ Pulled Jackfruit Sandwiches were bursting with smoky, sweet & tangy flavors, and were out-of-this-world delicious! The jackfruit was so tender, hearty, juicy and the texture was on point. They have become a staple recipe in our home now and I’m so glad I made them. I highly recommend this recipe.
Whether you are a transitioning vegan, newbie, or a veteran vegan, this book is a must-have for your plant-based kitchen. It’s simple, yet chock full of flavorful recipes for you to enjoy.
These recipes are great to prepare when your non-vegan friends come over, too. It’s always fun to watch them ooh & ahh in amazement when you say it’s vegan. Veganize It! will be hitting the shelves March 7, but you can pre-order it here.

- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 yellow onion, minced
- 1 (16-ounce) can water-packed jackfruit, drained & shredded or thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon tamari soy sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce, store-bought or homemade
- 4 sandwich rolls, split and toasted
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the jackfruit and cook until softened, about 10 minutes.
- Stir in the soy sauce & season with the paprika, salt and pepper to taste. Add as much of the barbecue sauce as desired, stirring to mix well.
- Use a fork (or two) to break up the jackfruit. If hard pieces remain, remove them to a cutting board and finely chop, then return them to the skillet.
- Cook for about 10 minutes to heat through and blend the flavors. Pile the jackfruit mixture onto the toasted sandwich rolls. Serve hot.
* Purchase young green jackfruit in water, not syrup, otherwise the recipe will be sweet.
* I used low sodium tamari sauce
